Family ski trips at Wachusett Mountain, Massachusetts

Who’ll love a family ski trip at Wachusett Mountain

  • Boston-area families who can’t get away for a long day, but want to feel like they are getting away
  • Boston-area families with beginning skiers

The two biggest reasons for loving family ski trips to Wachusett Mountain:

#1)  It really is an eight-hour vacation
Most ski resort slogans are worthless.  But occasionally, Wachusett kicks around a slogan: “The eight-hour vacation.”  And they are right.  From Boston, there’s enough space between urban sprawl and the mountain to make it feel like you’re escaping, but it’s a quick drive so you’re not chewing up too much time getting there.

#2)  Great terrain for beginners
Wachusett has invested in two long carpets, making it easy for beginners to get up the mountain.  And when they graduate from the carpets to the lifts, the Monadnock chair takes them up to a choice of a few long, gentle green slopes without the speed demons zipping by.  And when they graduate from that, there next level is very novice friendly.  It’s a spectacular place for family members to learn how to ski.

Getting to Wachusett Mountain:
It just couldn’t be easier.  Except at rush hour, it’s an honest 45 minutes west of the Route 2 and Route 128 intersection.

Communications at the ski area:
Verizon coverage is pretty spotty.

Dealing with Wachusett:
The downside of being so amazingly accessible is that Wachusett is one of the busiest ski areas in New England.  Skiing off peak is a treat there.  Skiing during peak times is a bit of a zoo.  The good news is that it’s a factory, but at least it’s a pretty well-run factory.  If you want a close parking space on a packed day, you can pay for that.  If you want to get a table during the lunch hour, they have two sit-down restaurant areas that are more likely to have seats than the main seating areas.  And if you can spring it, rent one of their Mountain Suites — life is good when you have your own skybox overlooking the slopes!

Bottom line for your family ski trip:
Boston-area families are lucky to have Wachusett around.  There are very few major metropolitan cities in the country that have pretty decent skiing an hour away.  We were last out there on a Friday with a lot of other families playing hooky.  It’s well worth it.
